Editorial Notice
This editorial notice outlines the principles that guided the preparation of the digital edition of Punch’s Pocket Book Archive. It aims to ensure both fidelity to the original printed volumes and optimal readability and navigability in a digital environment.
Typography and Layout
For this edition, we have respected the original form of the volumes. The typographical formatting of characters and paragraphs—italics, small capitals, and paragraph layout—has been preserved. Typographical dividers separating different sections of the volumes have also been reproduced, though not in their original decorative forms. Considering their functional rather than aesthetic purpose, these dividers have been rendered as simple lines, even when they originally appeared as stars, hyphens, or other ornamental symbols.
Table of Contents
The original placement of the tables of contents has been respected, whether they appear at the beginning of the volume, or between its two parts. When presented in verse, they have been reproduced as such; when organized in columns or lists, they have been reproduced in columns only. Since our approach is not strictly that of a diplomatic edition, and with the goal of improving on-screen readability, we have chosen to present the tables of contents in two columns. When necessary, entries have been truncated and indicated with an ellipsis (…) to fit the layout.
Titles (Missing, Full, and Supplied)
For greater clarity, when page numbers are indicated as “ib.” for ibid. (reflecting certain typographical conventions of the time) and titles are missing or truncated, we have chosen to repeat the relevant page number and to restore the full form of the corresponding titles.
- When a title appears only partially in the table of contents but in its complete form on the corresponding content page, we have reproduced it in full.
- When a title is missing from the table of contents but appears on the corresponding content page—or conversely, when a content page title is missing, we have added or completed it accordingly from the table of contents.
- When a content page is not listed in the table of contents and bears no explicit title, we have supplied one for clarity.
All editorial inputs are displayed in grey; by hovering the cursor over the text, readers can see what type of modification has been made.
Abbreviations
Abbreviations have been reproduced as they appear in the original work. Where appropriate, they have been expanded for clarity. The abbreviated form is displayed in bold black, and the expanded form can be viewed by hovering the cursor over the text.
Figures and Facsimiles
Figures have been inserted within the body of the text, in accordance with the original edition. Facsimiles are presented as part of the digital edition, allowing readers to consult the original documents using the Mirador viewer and to verify the accuracy of the transcription when necessary.
Pocket Book Features
The calendar, cash account segment, and diary and memoranda sections have not been transcribed. Links to the scanned copies of these sections for each volume are provided. Readers can consult these pages using the Mirador viewer. Phase 2 of the project will include transcriptions of some of these entries.
Notes
Three types of notes are included in this edition: original notes, commentary notes, and authorship notes.
- Original notes are those present in the original volumes. They have been reproduced exactly as they appear in the printed edition. The numbering and note calls remain unchanged, with the added advantage of the digital format, which allows dynamic interaction: readers can click on a note call to access the corresponding note directly.
- Commentary notes have been added by the research team to provide context or enhance the reader’s understanding of the text.
- Authorship notes indicate, when possible, the presumed authors of the short fictions contained in the second distinct complementary section of Punch‘s Pocket Book, based on information drawn from the Punch Archive at the British Library (Bradbury & Evans ledger books).
The commentary and authorship notes share the same visual presentation and appear as pop-up windows. The initials of the note’s author are provided at the beginning of the note content (e.g., FB for Françoise Baillet, BQ for Bethany Qualls, CH for Clare Horrocks, SL for Sonja Lawrenson). For the 1875 volume, each authorship note is linked to the Curran Index.
Keywords
A set of keywords is available for each volume. These keywords, which will structure the forthcoming ‘research path‘ of the website, are tagged to the text blocks of the corresponding volume and are displayed in two different ways:
- Local display: keywords corresponding to each text block are shown directly beneath the edited block.
- Collection display: all keywords for the entire volume are shown in a panel on the left side of the edition, grouping under each keyword the titles of the sections in which they appear.
Readers can navigate either from the complete set of keywords allowing direct access to the corresponding sections or from within a specific section, where the local keywords are displayed. Clicking on any keyword opens the keyword index, which in turn provides access to the relevant passage in the text.
Indexes
Two indexes are available: a keyword index and a contributor index.
- The keyword index is enriched with definitions for each term, providing readers with useful contextual information.
- The contributor index lists the contributors and allows readers to access directly the texts written by each identified author.
