Index of keywords
“Tis’ said an Index is a prosy thing Punch, to re-verse it, will his Index sing.” (PPBk 1845 – Contents Part II)
To create the keywords that classify the images and texts in these three volumes, PPBkA research team members followed an inductive, iterative qualitative process. Our aim was to reach a collective understanding of what was important in these volumes (but perhaps not easy to find via a basic word search), plus learn where we already agreed and where we needed to build agreement. After working through all three volumes, we further consolidated the keyword tags to create a list of 117 non-hierarchical terms which can be added to in future iterations. These we defined drawing inspiration from other controlled vocabularies, such as the English Broadside Ballad Archive and Getty's Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT). For more details about this keyword process, see the post Making Metadata on the PPBkA Project Blog.
